Water reduction efforts, i.e., source reduction, is arguably, and literally, more effective than collecting trash / garbage / rubbish / refuse. Source reduction directly implicates the quantity of a finite resource. In this instance: water stretching.
Community cleanups, volunteer garbage collection, or functioning as an environmental custodian, are superficial resolutions. The trash is simply relocated from point A (the beach, forest, neighbourhood) to point B (the landfill). At no point in time is the amount of rubbish on the planet reduced, recycled, or repurposed into something usable.
